CROWN ESTATES OF HUNGARY - THE TRADITIONAL TOKAJI BRAND
24/11/00

Korona Birtok and Crown Estates of Hungary are new brand identities for the Tokaj Kereskedőház Rt, the leading Hungarian producer of Tokaji wines. The company owns the former Royal ‘Szarvas’ great first growth vineyard and the unique Crown Estates Museum Cellar, where the best vintages from the 20th Century and earlier are matured and stored in a spectacular 13th Century labyrinth.

At Foodapest 2000, the company is launching its new brands on the Hungarian market having launched them in the key UK export market in September. Recently some of the rarest Museum Wines were sold at auction at Sothebys in London. This auction generated over £20,000, with the highest price of £1,050 for a rare 1912 wine.

The new designs have been prepared for the company’s premium wines, which are being sold on international markets and will also become available in the premium markets in Hungary. The design, which is a radical shift from the previous branding, was created by an Anglo Hungarian project team, with much of the work being done by UK wine designer Amphora (see attached note for more information).

This transformation of its image is a major advance for the Tokaj Kereskedőház and is part of their response to the investment by a number of foreign investors in the region, some of whom do not always respect the traditions of Tokaji. The quality of Crown Estates wines are outstanding and represent years of tradition and expertise passed down from generation to generation.

Speaking at a reception at the British Embassy to launch the new branding in Hungary Zoltan Hegedus, the MD of the Tokaj Kereskedőház said:

"At Foodapest we are launching our new Brand identity here in Hungary. We owe a great deal to the British for the changes that are taking place in our company as we learn to compete in the modern marketplace.

The British Know How fund financed a report on the development of International n markets. We have now recruited Pol Roger UK as our agent in the important British market. New designs for our premium Crown Estates Aszu wines and the Castle Island dry wines were produced by Amphora Design, based in Bath. For the 2000 vintage dry wines we are working with Angela Muir, Britain’s leading wine adviser.

The 2000 vintage has been a great success the best Aszu vintage for many years and we are also the only company with large stocks from the excellent 1993 vintage.
